Week 6 Picks- PD

A week off from cricket for most of the folks and hopefully everyone is back fresh for the second half of the season. The deadline for the transfers have been completed and we have seen some predictable and some unexpected movements between teams. Let’s wait and watch to see if any of these movements will have a positive/negative impact on teams.

This is the weekend when teams play the one other team twice – the home-and-away series. It will be interesting to see if teams that won the first time can sweep the series or will the previous loser exact revenge? The US Women’s soccer team exacted revenge for the 2011 World Cup loss, can the WCL teams do the same?

Boyds vs Tigers at Strawberry: These teams met only a couple of week ago. Incidentally that was the last played game for both teams. That meeting at Jefferson wasn’t so fruitful for Boyds and ended up on the losing side by 40+ runs. Charan, Fowler and Imran made merry at Jefferson and put up a big score making it tough on Boyds. Adil responded with a good 50 but without enough support from other batsmen Boyds struggled to chase effectively even though they were gifted with 52 extras. Tigers know that playing at Strawberry will be different and will need to keep the pressure on Boyds by putting up a big score. Boyds will surely miss Adil (out on US duty) while Tigers will miss their skipper Imran (on vacation and trying to fix the financial issues in Greece..[JK]). With Roshan back in the team for Boyds, the other batsmen need to take up more responsibility and come up with good knocks to put any pressure on Tigers who might come in loaded with some new batting reinforcements flying in from Indian domestic circuit. PICK: TIGERS in a close game.

Dulles vs AFCA at Veterans: The last two meetings between these team this season in T20 and 40 overs has ended in AFCA winning the T20 and Dulles returning the favor by 98 runs in the 40 over contest. Juicy and Nihant ripped through AFCA’s bowling and made sure Dulles had a big score to defend successfully at Williamwirt. Since this game would be in Veterans, Dulles will again go in confident of repeating the magic, while AFCA will back themselves to do well in this return game. AFCA has lost the plot in the last 3 games (after a good start) and they will need to pull themselves back up in Premier division (but the ongoing Ramadan) might still hamper their team composition. Dulles will be gearing up to play their best cricket and notch up a good win this week. PICK: DULLES

Srilankan vs Virginia at Williamwirt: Their last encounter at Galway Park had given a breather to Virginia suffering from the loss to AFCA. Virginia put up good runs and then bundled SL out for paltry 64. Virginia batting was led well by Abbasi, Hector and Anirudh and if something similar happens this week with additional knocks from Naseer and Bartley could help them put a formidable total on board. SL needs to find the right combination and someone on the top to click with the bat. Their bowling also has disappointed and is missing the vigor they showed in DIV I last season. They have played well at Williamwirt and will need a consistent performance with the bat to have any impact on the game. PICK: VIRGINIA

Jamaica vs Zolon at Williamwirt (Game of the week): It might not appear so, since one is an undefeated team while the other has yet to win a single game in PD but from my vantage point this is the most compelling encounter in PD this week and a must watch. Their previous meeting ended prematurely with the game awarded to Zolon. The Jamaican team has been looking forward to this game and have loaded the roster with high quality players, including a transfer from Zolon itself in Trinson Carmichael. Jamaica has a lot to play for. The team wants to maintain its place in the PD and will utilize all resources at its disposal for the remainder of the season. In fact my source tells me that Jamaica isn’t just trying to remain in PD but thinks that with its resources has the ability to make the playoffs with a strong run in the last 7 games. A boisterous and hostile crowd is expected at William Wirt supporting the Jamaican team. The umpire has his work cut out in this game and will need to be on top of his game to make sure that everything is under control. There is high risk of the situation turning tense and hostile. Let’s hope this game sees a result on the field and not in the league office.

As for the game itself: Zolon is off to a good start unlike previous two seasons where they started slow but then found their groove. This year the team has won comfortably. They have lost of couple of key players to injury which will affect the balance of the team and also lost a couple of good players to transfers as well. It remains to be seen how the team adapts to these changes as there are big games coming up for them in the form of Virginia, Titans and Dulles in the second half of the season. If Zolon bats well to put a good score, they will also need to bowl well to keep Jamaicans in check. Jamaica has been batting well of late and will want that form to continue in this encounter. This could be a season turning game for Jamaica, if they apply themselves and put on a good show and upset Zolon. This game has all the drama both on and off the field and potential for an upset. This is the game I would even pay to watch. PICK: ZOLON

Vikings vs Cosmos at Galway Park: Their previous encounter ended in a huge loss for Vikings who have so far shown no signs of improvement. They have not performed to the level they are expected to and hence do not have a win in the 40 over season. They started the year well with 4 consecutive wins in T20, but lost their way losing the next 2 and then all games in 40 over so far for an ongoing 6 game losing streak. Their batting has not put up a respectable score except for the Boyds game, and even in that game they had a middle order collapse and that’s a huge concern. Their mainstays Waleed or Ammar haven’t clicked at all and for Vikings to do well and start putting some big runs on the board for their bowling to defend, these guys will be the key. Cosmos has performed exceedingly well in the last two outings and have won by huge margins and they will get on the field with all the confidence behind them. Ravi Teja Reddy is already a star in this league and Pradeep in great form with Sarav too coming into form, the batting looks formidable. The bowling has been very consistent too. This team has so many all-rounders that it gives Dharma so much flexibility. The team is high in confidence, which is the exact opposite for the state of mind of Vikings. PICK: COSMOS.
